Are You in Your Element?
Can you answer these two questions:
1. What do you love to do?
2. What are you good at?
Sir Ken Robinson, in his new book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, says answering these questions is one of the keys to a joyful and engaged life. If you can work at something you love to do, and are good at, you’ll be passionate about it and money won’t be the reward. Like Warren Buffett you’ll tap-dance to work each day.
In an interview on Charlie Rose, Sir Ken says even when your day-job doesn’t meet that criteria, find a way each day to do that activity. Too many people, he says, struggle to get through the work week, eager for the weekend because their work is not engaging. They do it, but it’s not what they love.
I have several friends who love music and are very good at playing or singing; it’s tough to make a living as a musician but they constantly find ways to play and perform as a hobby.
Are you in your element? If not, what would it take?
